System selection

Muon imaging systems

Choose a detector around your target, available access and measurement time. Geoptic’s systems use naturally occurring cosmic-ray muons to investigate density variations without introducing an artificial radiation source.

Atlas

Atlas

A configurable, large-area detector system for non-invasive imaging of structures and the ground around them. Multiple detector modules provide broad coverage from accessible survey positions.

When to consider it

Accessible survey positions where broad coverage and limited site access time are important.

Typical applications

  • Railway tunnel assessment, including investigation of voids behind linings
  • Underground construction monitoring and geotechnical surveys
  • Structural investigations targeting density anomalies and material loss

Prism

Prism

A compact, modular muon imaging system for detailed density measurements in confined environments. Individual units support targeted investigations, while multiple units can form arrays for broader coverage.

When to consider it

Restricted spaces and targeted investigations where a compact detector can be positioned near the region of interest.

Typical applications

  • Localised void and density investigations in tunnels and mines
  • Assessment of concrete, rock and composite structures
  • Continuous monitoring and distributed multi-detector deployments

Strata

Strata

Slimline detectors lowered into boreholes to investigate deeper subsurface features. Detectors can be connected in a string, with shared power and communications linked to a surface data-acquisition node.

When to consider it

Subsurface targets where a suitable borehole provides a measurement position that surface access cannot offer.

Typical applications

  • Borehole-based subsurface density investigations
  • Downhole deployments in water-filled or demanding environments
  • Multi-depth detector strings for extended subsurface investigations

Measurement planningConsider when site access time is constrained; acquisition time still depends on the target and geometry.Suitable for monitoring where a detector can remain deployed; arrays can increase measurement speed.String length and detector count are selected for depth, geometry and required acquisition time.

These are starting points for selection, not guaranteed performance limits. Achievable resolution and acquisition time depend on target size, density contrast, material thickness, detector position and the available muon flux. A feasibility assessment establishes whether the proposed geometry can answer your investigation question.

Service Options

Explore all services

Extend your muon imaging system with support services for deployment, ownership and ongoing monitoring.

Muon Technical Support: Standard

Planned; not presently available. Intended for routine technical queries about equipment operation, basic diagnostics, data quality and software guidance during UK business hours.

View Service Page

Muon Technical Support: Enhanced

Planned; not presently available. Intended for operational deployments needing faster technical response, extended agreed coverage, a named technical lead and expert review of detector data.

Muon Technical Support: Mission Critical

Available as part of a Geoptic-supported deployment with embedded staff. Provides priority escalation to a designated technical specialist and incident coordination during agreed deployment windows.

Extended Warranty

Available now. Two-year extended cover for eligible minor and major repairs, including shipping and associated support. Geoptic will confirm equipment eligibility and coverage terms with the quotation.

Remote Monitoring

Available for suitable leased systems. An installed muon imaging system records measurements over time to track density variations in and around the structure. Monthly reports summarise the measurements and observed trends. Priced per monitored site, per month.

What to tell us about your investigation

You do not need to choose a detector before contacting us. Share what you know, and we can assess the appropriate system and deployment approach.

  1. Target and decision: what you need to locate or monitor, its approximate size and the decision the results must support.
  2. Structure or ground: material, thickness or depth, drawings and any existing investigation data.
  3. Access: possible detector positions, available space, borehole dimensions and site restrictions.
  4. Timing and services: access windows, possible deployment duration, power and communications availability.
