Geoptic is pleased to announce a new collaboration with the National Nuclear Laboratory (NNL), Sellafield Ltd, and FIS360 Ltd in support of ongoing remediation activities at the Sellafield site.

As part of their long-term commitment to responsible site stewardship, Sellafield Ltd are undertaking a programme of trials to explore innovative technologies that can assist in understanding and managing the subsurface environment beneath their facilities. Within this programme, Geoptic’s unique borehole-format muon detectors are being deployed to characterise and image the subsurface beneath one of the site’s buildings.

This pioneering application of muon tomography will deliver valuable insights into the structure and properties of the underlying geosphere, thereby contributing to improved knowledge and decision-making in the management of this complex site. The work also represents an important step forward in demonstrating the potential of muon imaging as a robust and non-invasive tool for subsurface investigation in the nuclear sector and beyond.

Geoptic greatly values the opportunity to collaborate with its partners at Sellafield and looks forward to working alongside NNL and FIS360 to deliver this trial. We are confident that the project will highlight the benefits of tomographic muon imaging as a powerful technique to support remediation and site stewardship activities.
